Team Showjumping

This is mainly local inter-branch jumping by teams of 3 or 4, but some inter-school events also take place.

Typically two rounds are jumped: 1st untimed, 2nd against the clock - usually over a raised course. Pony Club rules permit a 3rd round over a shortened course if two or more teams finish round 2 on zero total faults, but this seldom happens since usually it's getting late & everyone wants to get home!

This is very much a team event as the best three scores in each round count towards your team score, so reliability and steadiness are just as important as speed. It is also possible to enter as an individual, but most people find it more fun to take part as one of a team.

If you want to be in a showjumping team contact (at least 2 weeks before the event):

Team Team manager Typical age (varies - see below) Typical jump height (varies - see below)
Open Lois and Iain Paul (01884 839579) Under 21 2'9" - 3'0" 1st round
Junior Situation vacant
Please contact a committee member if you would like to volunteer
14 and under 2'3" - 2'6" 1st round
Mini

Situation vacant
Please contact a committee member if you would like to volunteer

11 and under 1'6" - 2'0" 1st round

Variations: Unfortunately ages are not standardised for these competitions: some are age on 1st Jan, and some are age on the day. And the Open / Junior / Mini age brackets vary between competitions, as do the jumping heights - check each schedule carefully! If you are a borderline case check with the relevant organiser(s) for a given event. In most events you can enter in two or even three age groups if you meet the age requirements and can jump the fences.

Prince Philip Cup (mounted games)

Newcomers are always welcome - contact Becky Daykin 07798 862872 see the Prince Philip Cup page for more info

Anyone under 15 as at 1 Jan is welcome to come along and have a go at this - it's fun so come along and give it a try. Although rallies will be weekly from 25 Feb (2.30 to 4.30 pm at Axon Farm, Burlescombe weather permitting) you don't have to come along every week.

Cost: £2 For more details and to check venue if wet, contact Beccy Daykin 07798 862872

Max Carew writes (April 2010)

Please could any members who would like to try polo contact me on max@westcountryrenovations.co.uk or 07736 074178. We welcome any new players, all you need is a pony. We have sticks, bandages and balls to lend, lots of advice, coaching and enthusiasm.

This Summer has so much to offer up and coming players:-

Justin Stanhope White of Taunton Polo grounds is holding training rallys on Sundays at Taunton Club these sessions are aimed at younger members aged between 6 and 13; they are designed to introduce polo to new players (and their ponies) , teach the rules, tacking up and pony welfare. He is an accredited HPA Coach and anyone who would like to join in should contact me. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone to 'have a go'.

Additional training sessions will be organised for more experienced players, those on polo ponies and older children who are keen to start.

West Somerset Polo Club is also available to all Tiverton Pony Club Members and welcomes newcomers with open arms!

The Pony Club Polo tournaments start on the 11th of July, there are 2 tournaments in the South West: on Tuesday 13th of July at Vaux Park, Wigborough and on the 14th July at Taunton Polo Club: I'd like to encourage anyone who would like to play polo for Tiverton to contact me.
